A toilet fill valve. Little did I know that this little gadget would define a large part of my extended weekend.

GFJ came down late Saturday afternoon, and we took a long "local" drive before having pizza in a White Plains pizzeria near where I used to work. It was good to drive around places which brought back memories, but I was careful NOT to mention too many of those which referred to my late wife. Instead, I focused on those related to my former employer and other people I knew from my life in the Northern Suburbs.
I was pleasantly surprised about the quality of pizza at the place we stopped at. But this was not a typical pizza joint. The restaurant was halfway between the center of White Plains and Mamaroneck on Mamaroneck avenue in a residential area mostly devoid of restaurants and delicatessens. So this place could have gotten away with being mediocre. Instead, it had a nice, but noisy, atmosphere. And the pizza was very good. How could one argue with that? I couldn't. And with a place that was packed to the gills, most people would likely agree with me.
Once done with dinner, it was back home and in for the night....

The next morning, we were awakened by a call from a fellow co-op board member. She wanted me to call the emergency number if I had no hot water. And this I did. But when I went to the toilet, I found that there was no water in the reservoir for flushing the toilet. It seems as if the toilet fill valve had failed. AARGH!
Early in the afternoon, we were disturbed again. It seems as if Pat (my former hypnotist) had gotten herself a ticket to Mel Brooks, and was expecting us to give her a ride into NYC. As much as I could have emptied out the back seat of my car to do so, I considered this an imposition and said that my car was filled with stuff going to the donation bin and wouldn't be emptied until the following Saturday. I also said that we were taking the train into NYC, as we didn't want to deal with parking there. Pat was very disappointed, as she has problems going up and down stairs, and again, didn't think things through before spending money. But there's not much I can do for her. If she's not willing to think things through in advance, I can't be responsible for her screwups.
With no hot water for a good part of the day, neither of us wanted to go out. So we relaxed most of the day until I decided to take a quick rinse in cool water before going out to Home Depot to buy a new valve. Turning on the water, I was pleased to find that the hot water was again working. So both of us took quick showers before getting dressed and going out to Home Depot to pick up the fill valve.
I wasn't going to replace the fill valve on a Sunday evening, so we managed flushing (when needed) with a bucket of water I kept in the tub for this purpose. It was very strange using this workaround again. But it was better than starting a project and having to call for emergency help on a Sunday evening.

Monday morning came along with the task of replacing my toilet fill valve. So I took care of this task before GFJ and I parted until Wednesday's trip to NYC
More to come about Monday....
