Columbus Day. Slowly this commemoration of Italian American heritage is being shown for what it is: a drummed up occasion to help a minority group establish its place in American Society by celebrating the exploits of an incompetent explorer who helped exterminate indigenous people in a land far from where he intended to go. (That's one heck of a mouthful!) As for me, I always looked at it as either a day off from school or from work, and not much more than that.

Last night, GFJ and I agreed to meet somewhere in Newburgh or Fishkill for a movie and then dinner. She had to be at work early tomorrow morning, and couldn't stay here for the night. That's just as well, because my place was a mess and I wouldn't have the time to take care of it before she arrived. Fortunately, I was about to get up to take my shower when the phone rang again. My cleaning lady wanted to come over because she was in Westchester today. I had to tell her that my place was in a total mess, and that I'd see her in a couple of weeks as scheduled. So off to the shower I went after a few minutes writing the opening to today's entry.
As usual, both GFJ and I got to the diner a little bit late. We both ate a little too much. (She, less so, as she took a doggy bag of steak home with her.) Then it was off to the movies, where we saw The Mountain Between Us. One could look at this movie as a love story or a disaster flick. Either way, it is a pleasant diversion for a rainy afternoon. Afterwards, we had a cup of coffee at Starbucks to complete the better part of the day together.

Tomorrow, it's back to being Marian. And it's none too soon....
